Lisbon rewards slow travel. It’s a city of steep hills, tiled facades and viewpoints at every turn, and three days is enough to see the highlights without rushing.

Day 1: Alfama and the old town

Start early in Alfama, the oldest neighbourhood, before the day-trippers arrive. Walk up to São Jorge Castle for the view, then wander down through the lanes to the Miradouro de Santa Luzia. In the evening, look for a small fado house in Alfama for dinner and live music.

Day 2: Belém and the riverfront

Take the tram or a train west to Belém. The Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower are the big sights, and the pastry shop next to the monastery is where the famous pastel de nata comes from. Walk back along the river and finish at LX Factory, a former industrial site full of shops and restaurants.

Day 3: Sintra day trip

Trains to Sintra leave from Rossio station and take about 40 minutes. Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira are the most popular stops, so book timed tickets in advance in summer and arrive early.

Getting around

  • Load a Viva Viagem card for the metro, trams and trains.
  • The metro runs straight from the airport into the city.
  • Wear shoes with grip: the stone pavements are slippery.
