Bali is bigger than most people expect, and where you stay shapes your whole trip. Pick one or two bases rather than moving every night.

Choose your base

  • Canggu and Seminyak for beach clubs, cafés and sunsets.
  • Ubud for rice terraces, yoga, temples and a slower pace.
  • Uluwatu for clifftop views and surf beaches.
  • Sanur for calm water and an easy ferry to Nusa Penida.

What to see

The Tegallalang and Jatiluwih rice terraces are best in the early morning. Temples such as Pura Ulun Danu Bratan and Uluwatu are spectacular; bring a sarong to cover your legs, or rent one at the entrance. A day trip to Nusa Penida is rough on the roads but worth it for the coastline.

Getting around

Traffic is slow, so plan short distances between stops. Hiring a car with a driver for the day is common and good value for groups. Ride-hailing apps work in most tourist areas.

When to go

The dry season runs roughly from April to October. The wet season brings short, heavy showers and greener landscapes, with fewer crowds.
